Because of Greece's strategic geographical location, it is often used as a stepping stone by migrants traveling west from many Middle East countries. As a direct result, Athens has seen a tremendous influx of refugees over the past ten years, bringing to our attention this unique opportunity to minister ?to the least of these? among us (Matt. 25:40).
The Love Meals were an outgrowth of this heightened awareness, beginning ten years ago with a Christmas dinner for the poor. This beginning opened our eyes to the enormous needs of the poor in Athens and the great opportunities God has given us to express His love to them.
Since then, our ministry has expanded to a weekly meal (every Monday) and various special outreaches, bringing the love of Christ in tangible ways not only to Greeks, but also to Kurds, Iraqis, Iranians, Romanians, Albanians, and a myriad of other nationalities represented on the streets of Athens. On any given week, 200 needy people gather in HM's meeting hall in downtown Athens to enjoy a warm meal and to hear of the hope that Christ can bring to an otherwise desperate situation.
Needs of the Ministry: Workers: People who can dedicate their lives to helping meet the many needs of the poor and refugees (physical and spiritual).
Donations: It costs the mission about $1 (U.S.) per person to provide a warm meal, and we would like to provide at least one additional meal a week.
Equipment: Upgrading of our kitchen to meet the demands of the growing attendance.
